The program component of water, Sanitation and health (WASH) at Focus on Africa Development supports communities in providing access to safe water and adequate sanitation in order to improve the health and well-being of communities.

School health program

This project gave priority to the need for hygiene promotion and installation of water and sanitation facilities at Kibera Primary School, and specifically targets the girl child.
Unsafe menstrual care in the absence of latrines and inconvenient or mistimed defecation/urination put girls at serious risk. Facilities were not available; the suffering was immense, with more than 1200 girls forced by circumstances to share 6 pit latrines which are in a pathetic condition.

In a collaborative effort between Focus on Africa Development, Australian Direct Aid Program, Kibera Primary School and other stakeholders, in contributing towards improving the quality of life for children. FOAD renovated a toilet block used by boys and constructed a toilet block for girls in 2011 and 2012 respectively.

Improving Availability and Access to Portable water by house-holds

The current water situation calls for innovation across the board, both in terms of the business model for delivering improved water services and the technologies used.
Focus on Africa Development Inc. has been implanting projects that map out the lowest cost pathways to improved water provision, for which there are economic and social benefits to the house-holds.
FOAD has implemented water and sanitation projects in Kibera, Ijara, and Baidoa in Somalia. African women and men's divergent social positions lead to differences in water responsibilities, rights, and access and so African women are disproportionally burdened by the scarcity of clean drinking water.
